What it looks like...

Armed: A glistening black square, surrounded by a tight ring of fibrous cord, catches your eye.
Set off! An acrid stream of sulfurous air hisses quietly from a small hole in the <type> <box> ....
Looking blearily up through smoke and pieces of wafting debris, you realize that you must have been less than successful.
Set off by someone else: <Person> leans closer to the <type> <box>, sniffing suspiciously until a small explosion sends <him> flying back on <his> duff.
Successfully disarmed: You manage to work the contact fibers away from the cube of black powder lodged inside the lock casement.
Disarmed (safe): Several strands of wicker detonator lay inside the casement, separated harmlessly from their charge.
Notes: Armor protects body parts against the blast. Some people set these off intentionally in an attempt to cause bleeding they can tend.
Glance: You see that old glistening black square. Has to be the boomer trap.
-or-
You notice a tight ring of fibrous cord. Chances are it's the old boomer trap.
