What it looks like...
Armed:
Looking closely into the keyhole, you spy what appears to be a pulsating ball with some sort of metal lacing around it. The lacing runs to meet a coin sized piece of metal near the keyhole itself.
Set off!
Moving with the grace of a pregnant goat, you carelessly flick at the piece of metal causing a lace to rupture the sphere. Electricity leaps through the laces and focuses upon the coin before forming into a bolt of man-made lighting. It strikes you in the chest and sends you airborne!
Set off by someone else:
<Person> closes <his> eyes tightly as a small flash comes from the box and the keyhole begins to glow brightly. You are amazed to see a brilliant bolt leap from the keyhole and hit <Person> squarely in the chest, sending <him> sailing!
Successfully disarmed:
Reaching into the keyhole carefully, you knock free the coin sized metal and it falls to the bottom of the box with a light "thunk".
Disarmed (safe):
You notice a sphere with some type of lacing around it. It seems a small portion of the trap has been removed.
Notes:
These traps can cause several rather nasty bleeders, both external and internal, in addition to a large initial vitality drain and severe nerve damage. If set off in water, the effect is magnified, usually fatally so. These traps can cause tail wounds.
Glance:
Lightning bolt traps are the only ones that have that pulsating ball.
