What it looks like...

Armed: While scanning the <box> with a careful eye, you notice a small black crystal deep in the shadows of the <type> <box>.
Set off! With the precision and grace of a skilled craftsman, you grab the black crystal near the lock of the <box> and toss it aside.

As the crystal hits the ground, what can only be described as "liquid shadows" begin to pour from it! With a sudden motion, it envelopes you totally. You try to scream but no sound is heard. After a moment the shadow is gone and everything seems to be back to normal.
Set off by someone else:
Successfully disarmed: With the precision and grace of a skilled craftsman, you grab the black crystal near the lock of the <box> and toss it aside.
Disarmed (safe): You see nothing of interest in the <box>. It seems harmless.
Notes: This trap makes you unable to speak understandably. All your words become gibberish. The effect wears off after a few minutes.
Signs are unaffected by this trap, and can still be used to communicate. Only verbal speech is garbled.
Glance: Black crystals always mean one thing... the shadowling trap!
