What it looks like...

Armed: A crust-covered black scarab of some unidentifiable substance clings to the <type> <box> by six tiny legs, all of which are firmly imbedded into the metal and don't look very easy to remove.
Set off! Not sure where to start, you begin by prying off the body of the crusty scarab, hoping to break it free of its clinging legs. It seems to work, until the discarded insect body explodes in a swirl of sand.

The sand devil spins and whirls, rapidly growing in intensity until it reaches the size of several Humans. As the stinging winds die down, they leave in their place several very angry vykathi reaper standing right beside you!

The stinging, sandy winds have made you pause.
Roundtime: 12 seconds.
Set off by someone else:
Successfully disarmed: By focusing on its tiny legs, you are able to pry off the crusty scarab one small piece at a time. Finally, the body of the faux insect falls away and crumbles, surprisingly, into sand.
Disarmed (safe): Several small pinholes centered around the keyhole indicate that some sort of apparatus, previously attached, was picked apart and removed from the <type> <box>.
Notes: If you set one off, you find yourself surrounded by Vykathi reapers, who appear at melee range. Since you are stuck in roundtime from the trap, and they don't need to advance, any companions with you have only a couple of seconds to attempt to drag you out of the room before they strike you. The Vykathi stick around and wander a short time or until killed, potentially killing others in the area. Try to do these in a no-combat room; it keeps you alive. The sand will simply swirl and reform the trap, instead of becoming Vykathi. Also known as a "reaper," "reaver [sic]," or "scarab" trap.
Glance: The crust-covered scarab is unmistakable. This is a Vykathi trap, also known affectionately as the 'bug box.'
